Company History

Multidata was originally founded in 1984 as a one-person business by Michael Butz in Vienna, Austria. It‘s field of business was the selling of PCs and simple invoicing systems. In 1986, the company changed its legal form to a GmbH (a limited liability company) and in 1988 to a Co KG (a limited partnership with a limited liability company as general partner). In the same year, the company moved to Vienna’s 13th district and Karl Hajek became minority shareholder. Furthermore, release II of the software that is now known under the name MD-Premium.NET was introduced. In 1991, the company signed a VAR contract with IBM and started distributing IBM RISK 6000 systems. In the same year, Elgar M. Zeisel acquired a minority shareholding and the company relocated once more – to Perchtoldsdorf in Lower Austria. In 1994, the company settled down in its own company building in Breitenfurt bei Wien. The company founder, Michael Butz, left the company, and Elgar M. Zeisel and Karl Hajek became 50:50 shareholders. The company was subsequently renamed to Multidata Software. The Windows-based release III of the software was published in 1996. Multidata came through the big IT hype and the euro conversion in good shape and, in 2002, was able to release version IV of the software, which utilized an Oracle database and was therefore suitable for large customers. It is this fourth version of the software that forms the foundation of the entire MD-Premium.NET solution, which, however, only fully came into being with the following release. From this point forward, it was possible to customise the software according to the customer’s requirements and even the support team could adapt the existing code.

Around the turn of the millennium, Multidata expanded into foreign markets, especially into Eastern Europe. As a result, subsidiaries were established in Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. From 2005 onwards, collaboration with distribution partners was intensified. By doing so, the company could gather valuable input, which eventually lead to release V. This version was introduced in 2010 under the name MD-Premium.NET, which is also the current version of the software. It has received a completely overhauled user interface. In the same year, Multidata Germany was founded. This subsidiary focuses on the German market. Starting in 2011, the support team (and to some extent the programming team as well) have been gradually outsourced to Groß Gerungs in Lower Austria. In 2018, a modern, new office was constructed there and the team was able to move in in 2019.

As of version III, Multidata’s software is available in multiple languages and is used by customers all over Europe. The company’s customer base spans an area from Bulgaria to Spain and from Hamburg to Zagreb.
